ARMENIA, Cilician Armenia. Royal. Hetoum I, 1226-1270. Tram (Silver, 23 mm, 2.84 g, 7 h), bilingual type, Sis, AH 637 = AD 1239/40. Within a dotted circle, Hetoum I, the Armenian vassal of Kay Khusraw II, on horseback to right, holding a staff topped with a fleur-de-lis; to left and right, cross and crescent; around, ‘ՀԵԹՈՒՄ ԹԱԳԱՒՈՐ ՀԱՅՈՑ’ (‘Hetoum, king of the Armenians’ in Armenian). Rev. Within a dotted circle, ‘al-sulṭān al-aʿẓam / Ghiyāth al-Dunyā wa al-Dīn / Kaykhusraw ibn Kayqubād’ (‘The Supreme Sultan Ghiyath al-Dunya wa al-Din Kay Khusraw, son of Kay Qubad’ in Arabic); around, ‘ḍuriba bi Sīs sana sabʿ wa / thalāthīn / wa sitta miʾa’ (‘Struck in Sis in the year 637’ in Arabic). Album 1221. Rare. Lightly toned. Some minor corrosion, and with nicks and scratches, otherwise, very fine.
